Functional Medicine & Nutritional Therapy · London, UK
Paul Foley is a BANT-registered nutritional therapist and functional medicine practitioner working online with clients across London and the UK. Specialising in complex chronic illness where NHS and private investigations haven't provided answers — fatigue, gut dysfunction, autoimmune conditions, hormonal imbalance, and more.
Functional medicine investigates the root causes of chronic illness rather than managing symptoms in isolation. As a BANT-registered nutritional therapist and functional medicine practitioner with 6+ years of NHS clinical experience, Paul Foley brings both the depth of functional investigation and direct knowledge of where NHS assessment reaches its limits.
Paul uses advanced laboratory testing, a detailed health and environmental history, and a systems-biology approach to identify why symptoms are present — and to design a personalised nutrition and lifestyle protocol to address them directly. All consultations take place via secure video call, with UK laboratory testing arranged through labs that post home collection kits to your London or UK address.
The pattern Paul sees most often in London and UK clients is this: symptoms that have persisted for months or years, multiple NHS referrals, extensive testing — and a result of "everything is normal." The investigation has been thorough by conventional standards, but the answers haven't come.
This isn't a failure of the NHS. Standard NHS panels are designed to identify serious disease within population reference ranges. They are not designed to identify functional imbalances — subclinical patterns of dysregulation that sit below the diagnostic threshold but are driving real symptoms every day. Fatigue, brain fog, gut dysfunction, hormonal disruption, and immune dysregulation can all be present and measurable without triggering a single abnormal result on a standard NHS panel.
Functional medicine uses a different tier of investigation — one that looks at the biological terrain that standard NHS testing doesn't reach. For many London clients, this is the investigation they've been waiting for.
Paul's work is designed to complement, not replace, your NHS or private medical relationships. He does not prescribe, diagnose, or recommend stopping any medication. He works alongside your existing GP and specialist relationships and is happy to provide a summary letter for your GP following the initial consultation.
Standard NHS blood panels — TSH, full blood count, basic metabolic markers, ESR, CRP — are valuable diagnostic tools. But they capture a narrow slice of the biological picture. For clients with complex chronic illness, they frequently return normal while the underlying drivers of symptoms remain unidentified.
Existing NHS and private test results are always reviewed as part of the initial consultation — including everything that came back "normal." The functional interpretation of these results often differs significantly from the conventional one, and this is frequently where important patterns first become visible.
Paul works with UK-based and internationally accredited functional medicine laboratories, all of which post home collection kits directly to your London or UK address. Tests involve a home finger-prick blood draw, stool sample, urine collection, or saliva sample — with prepaid return postage included.
Mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter metabolism, yeast and bacterial overgrowth — not available through NHS or standard private GP panels.
Full gut microbiome profiling, parasitology, digestive enzyme markers, and intestinal inflammation — far beyond the scope of NHS stool testing.
Identifies mould-derived toxins — a significant and widely missed driver of chronic fatigue, brain fog, and immune dysregulation in UK clients.
Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies — providing a complete thyroid picture the NHS TSH-only test cannot offer.
Four-point salivary cortisol mapping — a dynamic picture of adrenal function across the day that a single serum cortisol draw cannot capture.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth assessment — a common and frequently missed driver of IBS, bloating, and gut symptoms in UK clients.
Paul works with clients across London — Central, North, South, East and West — and across the wider UK, through secure online video consultations. The full clinical process takes place remotely.

Case Study · Complex Gut Issues · UK Client
Seven years of IBS, bloating & fatigue —
unresolved despite multiple NHS and private investigations.
Presentation
London client presented with severe bloating, alternating bowel habits, persistent fatigue and brain fog over seven years. Had been diagnosed with IBS by NHS gastroenterology. Two courses of low-FODMAP diet and antispasmodic medication had provided minimal relief. Private colonoscopy and gastroscopy both returned normal.
Investigation
Comprehensive stool analysis revealed significant SIBO, gut dysbiosis with elevated pathogenic bacteria, and markers of intestinal inflammation absent from NHS panels. Organic acids testing showed mitochondrial dysfunction and elevated markers of yeast overgrowth. A detailed dietary and environmental history also identified a prolonged course of antibiotics immediately prior to symptom onset.
Outcome
A targeted gut restoration protocol was implemented: SIBO treatment, microbiome rehabilitation, mitochondrial support, and a personalised dietary framework. Bloating resolved substantially within six weeks. At four months the client reported the best gut function experienced in seven years, with fatigue and brain fog both significantly improved.
"After years of fatigue and digestive issues I finally felt someone was looking at the whole picture. Paul helped uncover issues that had been missed and my energy is now completely different."— Sarah · London client · chronic fatigue & gut dysfunction
"I'd been through multiple NHS referrals and private consultants without answers. Paul approached everything differently — methodical, evidence-based, and genuinely focused on finding the cause rather than managing symptoms."— James · South London client · autoimmune condition
Yes. Many of Paul's London clients come after years of NHS and private specialist referrals without answers. Functional medicine uses a different investigative framework — one that looks beyond standard NHS reference ranges to identify subclinical imbalances that conventional testing doesn't capture. Existing NHS test results are always reviewed as part of the initial consultation.
In the UK, nutritional therapist is a professional title held by practitioners registered with BANT (British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine) and the CNHC. It requires an accredited qualification, ongoing CPD, professional indemnity insurance, and adherence to a code of ethics. Nutritionist is a broader, largely unprotected term — quality and training vary significantly. BANT registration is the benchmark to look for when searching for a nutritional therapist or nutritionist in London. Paul Foley is BANT-registered.
Paul currently works exclusively via secure online video consultation. The full clinical process — including testing, protocol development, and follow-up — takes place remotely with no loss of quality. Many London clients find the online format more convenient given commute times and scheduling flexibility.
